My Name is Betty and I’m a Blog Addict

The combination of good writing and real life is compelling. And, when you find a bad one, the combination of bad writing and a crazy life is mesmerizing.

Except, most of them are good. Really good. Misspellings kept to a minimum, grammar up to date and skilled prose as well.

Granted, most of the sites are by writers and editors but, others are political or written by friends and family.

The pressure to produce an informative, current and entertaining post daily is not alleviated by a visit to these sites; it is, in fact, increased. One thing about blogging, it forces you to write better and write faster.

My writing usually falls within one of these two styles: 1) frantically typing words in a stream of consciousness style including atrocious spelling & grammar (which I then go back and correct) or 2) painstakingly crafting each word; checking each entry against the Strunk & White standards (use less words) and editing my thoughts along with my prose.

Which works best?

Beats me.

Ideally it should be number one where my muse takes over and the words flow out through my fingertips and onto the electronic screen. Pearls of wisdom to be examined by the reader for hidden meaning and deep thoughts.

In reality it’s usually complete dreck.

On the other hand, editing and creating are two skills best separated by time. When I attempt to edit as I write, the text becomes formal and my voice gets lost in the process.

The best way is a combination of the two styles. Letting the thought flow naturally but, remaing aware of the need to be coherent, correct and, yes, even charming. Usually, I compose first thing in the morning (or late the night before) then move on to other tasks before returning with fresh eyes to edit and polish.

It doesn’t always work. I have the posts to prove it. But, it does make me write. Everyday. After all, that is the point isn’t it? To write better you have to write a lot. Like any other skill, practice makes perfect. Or, if not perfect, at least better each day.

Stephen King would add reading to this formula. He says that reading makes you a better writer. Read what you want to write so that you see what is selling in that marketplace.

Everyday I make the rounds of the blogs.  I read and study what is being written.

Everyday I sit before the blank screen and force myself to communicate my thoughts to you through the words and medium available.

Yes, I’m addicted. And, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
