Marcus Buckingham & Donald O. Clifton in their book Now, Discover Your Strengths posit the idea that instead of trying to be successful at everything we try, we’ll get greater results if we concentrate all our efforts on enhancing existing strengths.
Wayne Dyer in Choosing Your Own Greatness reinforces this idea when he says to concentrate on the gifts you already have instead of obsessing over your every weakness.
Investment guru Robert Kiyosaki sums it up:
“Intelligence means being able to find the environment where your genius comes out.”
How can focusing on your strengths help you become a millionaire real estate investor?
*Establish your top 5 strengths. You can go to strengthsfinder.com and take the evaluation (it’s free if you buy one of the books) or ask someone who knows you well to help you determine your strengths.
*Determine how your strengths can help you get to your Big Why. Here are a few examples:
Good with numbers?
Concentrate your efforts on the worksheets & return on investment calculations.
Do you love meeting new people?
Networking and creating your core group is going to be your forte.
Are you creative and love to shop?
You’re going to be great at choosing finishes, colors & furniture for your rehab properties as well as staging them to sell or lease.
Whatever your strength is, there’ll be a way to use it in creating & improving your real estate portfolio. Once you’re aware of where you shine, incorporate it into your plan for success.
*Delegate any task that doesn’t fall within your 5 strengths. The key to maximizing your talent and time is to know when to let someone else’s talents take the reins. You can hire someone to help, bring on a partner with complementary skills or use professionals like appraisers, lenders, etc.
*Evaluate your progress quarterly. You should see improvement. If you’re not reaching your goals it could be because you don’t have your top strengths quite right. Start from the beginning, take the test again and see if the results are different.
Good luck & be strong.
